HANALEI — A California visitor was discovered unresponsive in the water off Hanalei Beach Park on Thursday.

Investigators with the Kauai police announced that on April 24, at approximately 12:45 p.m., first responders were dispatched to Hanalei Beach Park after receiving calls regarding an unresponsive swimmer in the water.

The unresponsive woman was brought to shore by bystanders after noticing she was floating near the edge of the water. Once on the scene, firefighters, along with the American Medical Response medical team, began advanced life-saving measures on the swimmer.

The woman was then transported to the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital in Kapaa, where she was pronounced dead and identified as 72-year-old Ricki Fehr from California. Her death marks Kauai’s fourth water-related fatality. KPD extended its condolences to her family and friends during this difficult time.

No foul play is suspected in this investigation, however, an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of her death.
